Proper use of a double-bladed lightsaber requires the specialization Lightsaber: Double-Bladed Lightsaber. Without the proper specialization, the difficulty to use a double-bladed lightsaber is very difficult, and none of the special benefits of the double-bladed lightsaber may be used.
Although it may be stored more easily, the Hinged Double-Bladed Lightsaber requires an additional action to bring into use.
Background: The hinged double-bladed lightsaber was a double-bladed lightsaber variant that featured a hinge in the center of the hilt. It folded for easier storage and one or both blades could be activated while the weapon was collapsed, the parallel blades being able to trap the blade of another lightsaber. Some Jedi Temple Guards carried this style of lightsaber, as did Jedi Wayseeker Orla Jareni and Jedi General Pong Krell, the latter of which having owned two of them.
Hinged double-bladed lightsabers were effectively two single-blade lightsabers joined by a hinge at their pommels. This allowed for greater portability while being carried on a user’s belt. Wielders could activate one or both blades while the weapon was still folded, with the parallel blades able to trap the blade of another lightsaber.
Hinged double-bladed lightsabers had a history with the Jedi Order. Some members of the Jedi Temple Guard wielded these variations, in addition to their yellow-bladed lightsaber pikes which were also identical in design. During the High Republic Era, Umbaran Jedi Wayseeker Orla Jareni owned a white hinged double-bladed lightsaber.
During the Clone Wars, Jedi General Pong Krell’s four-armed Besalisk anatomy allowed him to wield two hinged double-bladed lightsabers, one with blue blades, and the other with green blades.
In 3 BBY, while venturing into the Lothal Jedi Temple, Kanan Jarrus experienced a Force vision that featured several Jedi Temple Guards—including the Grand Inquisitor—wielding such weapons.
In 35 ABY, while searching for the wayfinder on Kef Bir, Rey fought a vision of herself as a Sith. In the vision, her dark-side counterpart wielded a hinged double-bladed lightsaber with unstable red blades.
